In its heyday of the 1970s and '80s, the Quilted Bear was a gathering spot for business leaders, politicians and movers and shakers, plus plenty of everyday diners lured in by large portions, reasonable prices and generously poured drinks from the enormous centerpiece bar. Like El Chorro Lodge in Paradise Valley, which shuttered in May, the Bear's passing marks an end to an Arizona era, when a restaurant's owner could be as a much of a draw as its food.
